WHEN
BastrenKL is released in December 2007. It is intended to be a twice-yearly publication with the next issue coming out in May 2008. The first edition kicks off with approximately 45,000 copies printed.

WHERE
The map's coverage includes Kuala Lumpur city centre, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Ampang, Cheras, Selayang, Serdang and even Putrajaya!... Tourism Malaysia is distributing 31,000 copies for free throughout its information centres. The rest will be sold at bookstores and newsagents throughout Kuala Lumpur, the Klang Valley and Malaysia for only RM5.

WHO
BastrenKL is published by vectordesigns. It took us 1 full year to come out with this product, not including the time it took to create its forebears (DBKL brochure, bus stop maps), which have contributed to this latest incarnation. Even then it’s not perfect, but we hope you can help us in collectively improving public transport information, and hopefully along the way, the urban living experience in KL!

WHAT
The first and only map guide bringing together train and bus routes on a to-scale map from all operators in a comprehensive and user-friendly way! Commuters can now see how to get round the city and its suburbs at a glance! This info also includes interconnections, frequencies, first train/last train, first bus/last bus, and locations of stations, bus stops and terminals.
All this makes bastrenKL the essential guide for existing and potential public transport users. bastrenKL comes in the portable A5 size (half A4); it easily fits into your bag or pocket. Also it is arranged into a 24-page booklet so you don’t have to worry about folding back a huge map! bastrenKL is written in mainly English and secondarily, Bahasa Malaysia.

WHY
One day, approximately the time that the LRTs in Kuala Lumpur (then known as Putra and Star) had been up for about a year, Sulin was stuck in a traffic jam on Jalan Sultan Ismail. There is nothing more soul-deadening than a traffic jam! You are stuck and you have nowhere to go and there is nothing you can do about it! Thus, Sulin thought, wouldn’t it be great if there was a guide that told me how to get about using public transport in KL? Coz there is none…!

Before, information from bus operators were dispersed and often not even documented. Thus the idea was born and about 8 years down the line, now you have bastrenKL – the first and only map guide bringing together train and bus routes on a to-scale map from all operators in a comprehensive and user-friendly way! It took a long time coming and it’s not perfect, but we’ve put a lot of work into it and we hope you find it useful!”
